How Not to Die (2025) is a thorough update of the 2015 best-selling publication that laid out the diet and lifestyle habits that science has shown can help prevent, slow, or in some cases reverse the fifteen leading causes of death in the U.S., including heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer’s.
Who is Michael Greger?
Michael Greger, M.D., is a physician and internationally recognized speaker on nutrition. He founded and runs the nonprofit NutritionFacts.org, which offers thousands of videos and articles on a wide variety of health topics. Dr. Greger’s other books include The How Not to Die Cookbook, How Not to Diet, How Not to Age, and The How Not to Age Cookbook.
Who’s the book written for?
Dr. Greger and his co-author, Gene Stone, made every effort to make How Not to Die accessible to lay readers. I believe the book is written primary for:
· Anyone interested in preventing, slowing, or reversing one or more major chronic diseases, especially people who are new to nutritional science and new to the notion of plant-based eating as a disease-fighting strategy
· Anyone interested in diving into how recommendations from scientific studies can translate into daily choices of what to eat and drink. People who already stick to a healthy plant-based diet can refine their knowledge of the most potently helpful foods to eat for maximum health
· Medical and health professionals who want to stay on top of current nutritional science
Why is the New Edition Worth Reading?
The last ten years of nutritional research has not only led to updated citations and fine-tuning of ideas from the first edition, but has also yielded a number of exciting results, such as Dean Ornish’s study with Alzheimer’s patients. The authors also make helpful connections between this book and findings from later books—How Not to Diet and How Not to Age—helping us better understand how weight management, aging, and freedom from chronic disease fit together. And in the “what would Dr. Greger eat” sections, the author explains why he’s given up his formerly favorite fruit.
Is Dr. Greger Selling More Than a Book?
All of the proceeds Dr. Greger receives from the sales of his books and speaking engagements are donated to charity. The Nutritionfacts.org website is free to all, without special paywalls or subscriptions. In addition, Dr. Greger does not endorse or sell supplements, diet plans, or courses. The organization is fueled mainly by contributions and grants.
